Solar in the City
Fort Knox Self Storage West Melbourne just got a whole lot greener- with rooftop solar! It’s no secret that at Fort Knox Self Storage we like green. Whilst our logo is green in colour, we are also focused on accomplishing green goals. One of our green goals is adding solar panels to our large roof spaces to generate sustainable electricity. The newest addition brings the total number of Fort Knox facilities with rooftop solar systems to 7.
Our good friends at Enervest in Camberwell were tasked with adding 248 solar panels, at 400W each, to our substantially sized West Melbourne site roof. This has given us a system that is 99.2kW, which will generate approximately 132467.66kWh of electricity per year, and save 150 tonnes of toxic CO2 emissions. We are now powering our self storage site and feeding green electricity into the grid for our Melbourne city neighbours.
Part of the big plan.
A few years ago we began rolling out a plan to minimise the environmental impact of every Fort Knox Self Storage site. Our solar plan goes hand in hand with our other environmental initiatives. Firstly we reduced power consumption and installed energy efficient LED globes and lights on timers with motion sensors. Secondly we have gone paperless with paperless contracts and a completely online system. In addition, we have planted our gardens with drought proof plants to reduce water consumption. By making these changes, we are proving that businesses can be more sustainable.
The solar roll out.
In 2014, we began our solar program with the installation of 240 panels at our Scoresby site. In 2018 this grew to 1514 panels across 6 sites. Now we have 1762 solar panels covering 7 out of 10 Fort Knox Self Storage sites. With each new solar system installation, we are getting closer to achieving our sustainability goals.
Sustainability for future generations.
A sustainable future is important to us. At Fort Knox Self Storage we are as green on the inside as we are on the outside. With one new solar panel roll out complete, it is time to look forward to our next environmental initiative.
