Ever wondered about the history surrounding your place of employment or what may have stood in place of you favourite restaurant or bar those many years ago?  As time goes on, businesses expand and move on, or they can cease to exist altogether and become a shadow of a by-gone era.

Upon a recent discovery that the one of the previous businesses that occupied our Eltham self storage site was a hat factory, Fort Knox Self Storage in Eltham are now on the hunt to uncover any pictures and anecdotes from local residents about other historical aspects of the of our Eltham building and grounds.

Our manager at the Sherbourne Rd storage facility, Suzanne Randles has said people often commented that they knew of someone who had worked there. One customer mentioned to staff at our Eltham storage site he used to provide rabbit skins for the factory; he’d “present approximately 100 skins a month and receive five shillings a pair.”

This interesting bit of history lead to Suzanne creating a display dedicated to the storage site’s history that would answer Fort Knox customers’ questions.

According to Suzanne, another piece of interesting history is the skate park that used to be here and was well-used in the ’70s and ’80s. It was called the fish pond and was one of the old ponds from the hat factory. The site’s gardens are also now under heritage protection, but Ms Randles said she had been unable to find photos of how they once looked.
