Sleep At The G 2016
As the sun went down on a cold and gloomy night, Melbourne’s iconic MCG was bustling with anticipation and enthusiasm. A group of courageous Fort Knox Self Storage team members joined in the buzz and excitement as the G transformed into a sea of boxes and sleeping bags. As the temperature dropped, the determination rose with over 1000 sleepers braving the cold, harsh concourse in a united spirit to raise much needed funds for youth homelessness.
Fort Knox Self Storage was once again proud to partner with Melbourne City Mission in support of their Sleep at the G event on Thursday 26th May 2016. In a city that is recognised for it’s livability, Melbourne has as many as 6000 youth homeless. And while this was a tough challenge we were privileged with many things that we take for granted on a daily basis. Although our comforts of home were striped from us and we slept on a box as a bed we still had so many luxuries that homeless youth go without. There was hot soup, lighting, clean toilets, shelter and security. For those who embarked on the Sleep At The ‘G challenge, it was a touching realisation just how severe a problem homelessness is. Can you imagine being cold, frightened, isolated, hungry and damp without a secure place to call home? Homelessness is a real problem and for many it’s through no fault of their own. Youth homelessness is often a result of abuse, family breakdowns and poverty.
With such great support from many of our friends, family and associates, the Fort Knox Self Storage team managed to raise an incredible $10,800, with the overall total for the event currently sitting on $498,605. This is the highest amount raised in the 4 year history of the event and the generosity everyone has shown has sincerely warmed our hearts. As a family business our company embraces family spirit. Our team of storage experts happily volunteered to participate and our wider team got behind them with a huge amount of support. We hosted a range of morning teas, a soup kitchen and sold homemade baked goods in an effort to achieve our goal. Events such as this have an enormous effect on the team. It strengthens their bond and comradery and builds the team morale.
Fort Knox Self Storage was happy to donate 1200 of our big boxes to ensure all the sleepers had a bed for the night. Our team added a little extra creativity building forts, drawing pictures and writing messages of support for all participants. Coupled with the amazing Melbourne City Mission volunteers we were there to greet guests and welcome them with a warm smile and hand them their box to sleep on for the night.
On behalf of all our team here we want to thank everyone who has made a donation and encourage all of you to get behind this great event next year.
Sweet Dreams xx
UPDATE. Melbourne City Mission produced the following ‘Thank You’ video of the night which gives a great insight into the people involved and the value of the event.
