Kicking Goals with Glen Eira Phoenix

Like a Phoenix rising, The Glen Eira Phoenix seniors team put in a great effort this season, kicking goals and moving up from Division 2 to Division 1 in 2013.

After a successful campaign in 2012, the Fort Knox Self Storage sponsored Phoenix, landed in 3rd position on the ladder just missing out on securing second place and an automatic promotion to Division 1.

Considering the talent, passion and commitment of the players during the year, George Antonopoulos, coach of the Division 2 team took it upon himself to write a letter to the Association. He asked for the team to be considered for a move to the 1st’s despite its 3rd position ranking. The soccer gods must have been smiling upon the Phoenix, as a move to Division 1 was given the thumbs up by the Victorian Churches Football Association.

Given the jump up to the higher division, expectations were fair to middling as far as an end of year result was concerned. But due to some stellar performances  from the players during the season, including  a 3rd place Best and Fairest in the Seniors Division for one of their players, Javier Markham, the team managed a very respectable 5th place.

Looking to the future coach George thinks the boys have got what it takes to go one better next season and make it further up the ladder, capitalising on the experience and determination of the team.

Fort Knox Self Storage have been honoured to be associated with the Glen Eira Phoenix and hope that the support of the company has at least helped in some way to allow the team to grow and develop. We look forward to keeping ties with George and the Phoenix, and we wish them all the best for the year ahead.
